Students learn about insurance industry from insiders

Sharing information about the Insurance Studies program and working in the insurance industry were (from left) Jennifer Buck, Andi Starkey, Dr. Steve Nameth and Janie Geis.Dean Steve Nameth recently held a luncheon on the Salem Campus so that business students could learn more about the insurance industry and the degree that could help get them through the doors.

Kent State Salem offers a bachelor’s degree in Insurance Studies. The degree was launched in 2012 and was the first such program to be offered in Ohio in more than thirty years. It is offered as a completely online degree program, yet students can also earn the degree through a combination of online and on-campus classes at any Kent State campus.

Guest speakers at the event included Janie Geis, a corporate officer for Wichert Insurance; Andi Starkey, the learning delivery manager for Westfield Insurance’s Westfield University; and Jennifer Buck, a current student in the Insurance Studies program and a Westfield Insurance employee.

The students learned that the insurance industry is a growing industry and that there are thousands of well-paying jobs available throughout Ohio. The guest speakers also emphasized that working in the insurance industry is not “just selling insurance.”

Geis is a 2005 graduate of the Kent State College of Business. At Wichert, she works closely with public entities, including fire departments and local government.

Starkey also graduated from Kent State, earning her bachelor of arts degree in journalism/mass communication (radio/TV sales and management) with a minor in business management. She has worked in the insurance industry for 20 years in customer service, underwriting and learning operations.

Buck currently works at Westfield Insurance while completing her degree. She serves as the president of Gamma Iota Sigma on the Salem Campus, the professional insurance and risk management fraternity.

Together with the College of Applied & Technical Studies (CATS) and the Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE), Kent State's Regional Campuses offer Talent Ready Scholarships up to $2,000. These scholarships, available through June 30, 2025, or when funds run out, will help local workers to enroll in specialized, industry-recognized certificate programs designed to open doors for career advancement.

While sorting through her email messages last year, Treasure Reynolds came across a message that offered a chance to study abroad, in Ireland. She dismissed it.

Three Kent State Salem faculty members, representing three different subjects, joined forces to explore student and teacher experiences with the Hyflex course format, focusing on its flexibility and impact on student success and engagement.

Collaborating on this research project were Dr. Rachael Blasiman, associate professor of psychology; Dr. Sheren Farag, assistant professor of horticulture; and Kristine Harrington, associate lecturer of English.
