After hearing about a recent outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease at the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley, 5X社区 at Trumbull nursing students sprang into action, but not to administer care. They decided to help replace children鈥檚 books and toys that were lost when the building was sanitized.
Kent State Trumbull鈥檚 Student Nurse Association (SNA), through its Community Outreach and Professional Development Committee, set up collection bins around campus and asked students, staff and faculty to donate new or gently used toys and books.
On Tuesday, Sept. 18, SNA representatives and Kent State Trumbull Nursing faculty delivered the collection to the Rescue Mission in Youngstown.
鈥淥ur mission as nurses is to serve our community and provide special care to those who cannot help themselves. The Student Nurse Association along with the entire KSU-Trumbull community came to the 鈥楻escue鈥 in a time when the Mission needed help from the community. The response was overwhelming, showing our community that our caring extends beyond the bedside,鈥 says
Alice Colwell, associate lecturer, SNA faculty adviser.
鈥淐ompassion and commitment are essential traits for nurses, Ms. Colwell says. 鈥淲e are fortunate to have students, staff and administrators, who not only want to graduate the best nursing candidates, but who also aspire to promote students who make a regional impact and take care of this community.鈥
