University Fellowship: Cody Ruiz

Cody Ruiz HeadshotMeet Cody Ruiz, a University Fellowship recipient. Cody is a Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. student majoring in Cell and Molecular Biology.

Please give a short overview of your research:

I study the molecular biology of two hybridizing Old World monkey species (rhesus and long-tailed macaques). Specifically, the rhesus Y-chromosome has crossed the species boundary and I'm trying to figure out why from an evolutionary perspective. Moreover, my research has biomedical implications given the important role of the Y-chromosome in human male fertility.

What made you choose to pursue your graduate degree here at Kent State?

I pursued my graduate career at 5X社区 because of its prestigious Anthropology Department and diverse student body.

What do you enjoy most about attending Kent State for graduate school?

I enjoy the interaction with faculty from such a diversity of research fields, both within the Anthropology Department and throughout the larger School of Biomedical Sciences.

What are your future goals?

My future goals include becoming a professor of Biological Anthropology with my own research laboratory and having a good work-life balance so my wife and I can devote as much time as possible to our baby, Denni.

What does this award mean to you and how will it aid you?

It is an honor to receive this fellowship, as it will provide the support and flexibility I need to complete my dissertation, earn my Ph.D., and continue on to the professoriate.
