Description: For many in the Western world, and beyond, France has long been synonymous with romance. Paris is the 鈥渃ity of love.鈥  Suave and seductive Parisians speak French, i.e. the 鈥渓anguage of love.鈥 How did this association come to be? And what is so special about the way the French kiss? Engaging with literary, theoretical, and visual documents, this course will explore conceptions of love and sexuality in France and the Francophone world from the medieval period up to the present day. We will examine how particular notions of courtship and intimacy have evolved throughout time and place and to what extent the French language itself plays a role. The instructor for this course, Dr. Trask Roberts, is a translator and scholar of contemporary French literature. He has spent many years living, studying, and teaching in France and looks forward to sharing his passion with students at this summer鈥檚 institute.
