Imagine this: You are logging on to access course materials, connecting with friends online, or submitting assignments. The integration of technology in your Kent State experience is what powers your learning. But have you ever stopped to think about the team behind the scenes who keeps the university's digital infrastructure running? At 5X’s Division of Information Technology (DoIT), our team of nearly 100 student employees is integral to the seamless technology experience you enjoy on campus.
Our student employees repair equipment, troubleshoot network issues, develop innovative solutions, and ensure data security. DoIT recognizes the contribution of its student employees working in distinct roles and positions. We take pride in our diverse team, which reflects the changing landscape of technology itself. These students are shaping the future of IT at our university.
Jenna Patrick, a recently graduated Visual Communication Design (VCD) major with minors in User Experience Design (UXD) and photography, exemplifies talent within DoIT’s student workforce. Her diverse skillset encompasses promotional design work, user experience research, and even photography for campus events.
"With the redesign of the KSU Mobile app, I've gained valuable knowledge of professional app design and workflow," Jenna says. "Working with a team that uses agile development has opened my eyes to the real-world process of iteration and refinement." This hands-on experience aligns perfectly with Jenna's career aspirations in UXD.
“All of the skills Jenna has employed while working for the Division of Information Technology will be of great use to her as she pursues work in the design industry.” says her supervisor Alison Haynes, Assistant Director at DoIT. “Jenna has taken the training she has received in Visual Communication and Design (VCD) and User Experience courses and used it to bring immediate value to our team. She is thorough, inquisitive, and eager to understand how to use her skills in photography and design in the workplace. Her work on the KSUmobile 6.0 redesign and photographing buildings on campus will have an impact for many years to come.”
DoIT offers student employees an invaluable opportunity to translate their classroom learning into real-world experience. Holden Stallsmith, a Student Application Developer at DoIT, brings fresh ideas to the team. "My job is to create solutions for departments," Holden explains. "From complex web applications to automated flows, our team strives to make their lives easier."
Holden's experience extends beyond technical skills. "Working here has given me invaluable communication skills with clients," he reflects. "No textbook or lab can teach you how to actively listen and translate user needs into effective software."
This emphasis on communication and technology aligns with Holden's career goals. He says, "This job has shown me that my passion lies within IT and software engineering. I want to use my technical skills to solve problems and collaborate with people."
Holden's supervisor Disney Maxwell, Sr. Application Developer at DoIT, echoes his enthusiasm: "Holden started with learning about the Microsoft Power platform. He has grown from developing solutions to leading projects with the MS Power platform. Holden brings a positive attitude and enthusiasm to the team. "
Jenna and Holden's experiences highlight the strength of DoIT's student employees. Working alongside experienced professionals, students gain direct involvement with technological challenges and a rewarding future. At 5X, we believe in personalized education for students' progress. We understand that classroom learning thrives alongside practical experience.
