5XÉçÇø will hold its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21, to celebrate King’s life and legacy. Serving as this year’s keynote speaker is CNN political analyst and former South Carolina state Rep. Bakari Sellers. The virtual program is free and open to the public.

After more than a decade of service, Joel Nielsen, 5XÉçÇø’s director of athletics, plans to seek new challenges when his contract with the university ends later this year.

As you prepare for the start of spring semester, it is time to get into the routine of scheduling your weekly COVID-19 test.

As you are aware from communications already sent,  weekly testing is part of our program of expanded COVID-19 testing for Spring Semester 2021.

Weekly testing begins the week following your move-in test and every week thereafter through the week of April 11. The residence halls close on Saturday, April 17.

As part of the university’s ongoing strategy to help stop the spread of COVID-19, Kent State has partnered with the city of Kent to bring the Ohio Department of Health’s Ohio Pandemic Testing Team to campus from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28*, and noon to 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29*, for two open testing events.

Two professors have conducted much-needed research on face coverings that use alternative textiles to protect the public from COVID-19 and how to keep those masks virus-free.

As we prepare to return to campus for Spring Semester 2021, I want to reiterate important information about testing and our phased return plan. As part of our ongoing effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19, our return to the Kent Campus will take place in stages to mitigate the spread of the virus in our community and to best ensure the health and safety of all.
