Minor in Japanese

5X社区's Minor in Japanese provides students with the opportunity to develop language proficiency while immersing themselves in the rich cultural and historical contexts of Japan. The program emphasizes speaking, reading, and writing skills, alongside an exploration of Japanese literature, traditions, and contemporary society. This minor complements a variety of majors, enhancing students' communication abilities and cultural awareness, which are valuable in fields such as education, international business, and cultural studies. Learning Outcomes

Program Learning Outcomes

Graduates of this program will be able to:

  1. Speak in Japanese using appropriate styles of speech and manners on topics ranging from personal to cultural and social issues.
  2. Write in Japanese using appropriate linguistic styles on various topics.
  3. Read and comprehend various types of writing in Japanese such as newspaper articles, short stories and web content with the help of dictionaries and other resources.
  4. Distinguish formal, informal and honorific expressions, and successfully code-switch, according to appropriate social contexts.
  5. Discuss Japanese cultural traditions and contemporary aesthetics.
Admissions for Japanese - Minor

Admission Requirements

Admission to a minor is open to students declared in a bachelor’s degree, the A.A.B. or A.A.S. degree or the A.T.S. degree (not Individualized Program major). Students declared only in the A.A. or A.S. degree or the A.T.S. degree in Individualized Program may not declare a minor. Students may not pursue a minor and a major in the same discipline.

  • Minimum 6 credit hours in the minor must be upper-division coursework (30000 and 40000 level).
  • Minimum 6 credit hours in the minor must be outside of the course requirements for any major or other minor the student is pursuing.
  • Minimum 50 percent of the total credit hours for the minor must be taken at Kent State (in residence).
