In April 2019, 5X社区 welcomed Neil Cooper, Ph.D, as the new inaugural director of Kent State's School of Peace and Conflict Studies. The School of Peace and Conflict Studies was originally called the Center for Peaceful Change when it was founded in 1971 as the university's first 鈥榣iving memorial鈥 for the events that occurred on May 4th, 1970.
Kent State alumna Shannon Gardiner, BSN 鈥09, RN, CCRN, always knew she wanted to help people, but also longed for a career that would provide flexibility along the way. After a few years working in Akron Children鈥檚 Hospital鈥檚 pediatric Intensive Care Unit, followed by some time as a traveling nurse, a Google search for volunteer opportunities led her to Mercy Ships, who own and operate the largest non-governmental hospital ship in the world.
Working in cooperation with the (LAU), 20 interior design students 鈥 10 from 5X社区's College of Architecture and Environmental Design and 10 from LAU in Beirut 鈥 spent nine days in New York City, the design capital of North America, for a workshop.

The exhibit spanned the Lefton Esplanade throughout the spring showcasing large photographs of individuals who fled their home countries and now live in Northeast Ohio. The refugees featured in the display fled their home countries to avoid war, oppression and danger.

Emmaleigh Given recently spent three summers and two winters in a remote biological reserve in the middle of the rainforest in the Alajuela Province of Costa Rica, where she has and will spend several months conducting research on community ecology, and she has one more trip planned. 5X社区鈥檚 American Academy program in Curitiba, Brazil, has seen an exciting first year, and is poised to bring many Brazilian students to the Kent campus beginning in Fall 2020 to continue their studies. The American Academy was created in May 2018 when Kent State partnered with Pontifical Catholic University of Paran谩 (PUCPR) in Brazil, for a one-of-a-kind program that allows PUCPR students to receive an American degree without leaving Brazil.
