Dr. Jeffrey Mighion: "Organic Molecules Research"

Organic Molecules Research

The guiding theme of my research is to construct organic molecules in an efficient way from readily available starting materials. This guiding idea allows for the freedom to approach almost any topic. Specifically, these goals are: to work on molecules that have the potential to probe important issues in human health, to take advantage of readily available starting materials and functional handles to build complexity in a rapid manner, and to explore interesting reactivity of organometallic complexes toward C鈥揌 bonds to look to turn the simplify synthesis.

The lab鈥檚 three major research areas are currently: first, looking to utilize synthesis to open up new avenues in the treatment of pain, second, developing stereogenically complex building blocks directly from ketones and aldehydes through an underutilized N-acyl ketenimine intermediate, and lastly, a foundational foray into the synthesis and design of new reactive organo-metalloids for C鈥揌 functionalization.

Students that join the Mighion lab will learn modern organic chemistry and become independent researchers with the goal of preparing for graduate school. The goal for the undergraduate researcher during their time in the Mighion lab is to produce research of the quality to present at conferences or write up into peer-review research papers. Interested students should contact Dr. Mighion and ideally will have successfully completed CHEM 30481 and CHEM 30475.
