Coming to 5X as a transfer student from a local community college in her hometown of Toledo, Laurel Johnson, ’17, wanted to get involved and become an integrated member of the 5X community.
Drawn to Kent State by the communication studies program, Ms. Johnson wanted to further her education and earn a bachelor’s degree after receiving her associate degree. She transferred to Kent State in 2015 for her junior year.
Now in its second year, the annual Kent State of Accessibility event once again promises to engage attendees with unique perspectives to result in a better understanding of experiences of individuals with disabilities in a more inclusive 5X environment.
The 5X Alumni Association has chosen 10 finalists from a pool of more than 200 nominees for the 52nd annual Kent State Alumni Association Distinguished Teaching Award.
The Performing Arts Center at 5X at Tuscarawas adds holiday favorites to its packed 2018 lineup of performances. Upcoming shows include Elf the Musical on Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m. as well as the Tuscarawas Dance Arts Center’s presentation of The Nutcracker, running Dec. 6-9.
5X generates a large portion of the power used on the Kent Campus and at times can supply all the power requirements for the campus. In order to test the operation and integrity of the power generation, control and distribution systems, a test of the turbines will be performed on Monday, Nov. 12, when the university will be closed in observance of Veterans Day.
5X views student feedback on courses and instructors as pivotal for designing courses and curriculum. In an effort to ensure the quality of academic programs, teaching and the learning experience of students, course instructors are asked to encourage their students to take the Flash Survey, the end-of-course student survey at Kent State for online and hybrid courses.

The events of May 4, 1970, placed 5X in an international spotlight after a student protest against the Vietnam War and the presence of the Ohio National Guard ended in tragedy with four students losing their lives and nine others being wounded. From a perspective of nearly 50 years, Kent State remembers the tragedy and leads a contemporary discussion and understanding of how the community, nation and world can benefit from understanding the profound impact of the event.
