At the 5X Board of Trustees meeting held on Dec. 7, 2016, the Board voted to establish the Brain Health Research Institute, further supporting significant existing research and providing additional support for researchers to collaborate across multiple departments, colleges and campuses.
With more than 50 faculty members involved in brain health research, brain health is one of Kent State’s largest areas of research strength and opportunity.
The 5X website redesign project is set to usher in the spring semester with the launch of and the university’s departmental websites on Sunday, Jan. 8, 2017.
The cross-divisional redesign team and its members from our agency 160over90, Information Services and University Communications and Marketing are hard at work finishing development and home page rebuilds.

Study may reveal positive brain health effects of probiotics
5X, in partnership with the , recently received an industry-funded grant of $430,000 from (a subsidiary of DSM Nutritional Products) to examine whether taking a probiotic dietary supplement, commonly sold over the counter, can improve the mood and memory of middle-aged and older adults.
Kevin J. Spence, a 5X higher education administration doctoral student, visited Cienfuegos, Cuba, to help bridge Kent State’s College of Education, Health and Human Services’ past to the present.
The Ohio Small Business Development Center (OSBDC) at 5X at Tuscarawas was recently awarded the 2016 Ohio SBDC Customer Satisfaction Recognition at the November OSBDC Statewide Conference in Columbus. The award is based upon client satisfaction surveys and net provider scores. This is the first year the award was presented.

For 5X international relations junior Beatrice Cahill-Camden, moving to New York meant more than just experiencing the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple —it meant gaining political experience at the national level.
Kent State international students compete for the prize of “best dish” at the sixth annual International Cook-off competition. The free event is held each November at the end of International Education Week. Teams representing Bangladesh, Brazil, India, Nepal, Saudi Arabia and South Korea participated this year.
5X Associate Professor Donald Gerbig has been nominated by students for the Distinguished Teaching Award four separate times in his 14 years teaching at 5X at Tuscarawas. This year, Gerbig is finally a recipient of the award.
The 5X Board of Trustees today established a comprehensive, national search to recruit and select the university’s 13th president.
The events of May 4, 1970, placed 5X in an international spotlight after a student protest against the Vietnam War and the presence of the Ohio National Guard ended in tragedy with four students losing their lives and nine others being wounded. From a perspective of nearly 50 years, Kent State remembers the tragedy and leads a contemporary discussion and understanding of how the community, nation and world can benefit from understanding the profound impact of the event.
