Nagasaki University of Foreign Studies, Japan

Nagasaki University of Foreign Studies (NUFS), founded in 1945 as Nagasaki College of Foreign Languages, is an independent, co-educational four-year liberal arts university. Inaugurated in Fall 2019, this exchange program offers KSU students with some Japanese language ability the opportunity to study at one of the seven foreign language institutions in Japan. Students may study for a semester or academic year. Although NUFS is a relatively small school with approximately 1,000 students, many opportunities exist for exchange students to become involved on campus and in the local community. The campus is currently located in Togitsu-cho, a suburb of Nagasaki City, and is bordered by Nagasaki City on two sides with a spectacular view of Omura Bay from its hilltop perch. There are new buildings on campus, including a gymnasium, multimedia library, and extensive multimedia center. There is one on-campus residence hall where exchange students live amongst other international and Japanese students.

Program Highlights

Students may participate in an academic year, fall semester, or spring semester exchange at Nagasaki University of Foreign Studies. NUFS is a foreign language institution, so all students are studying to become fluent in a second language. Exchange students will take language courses taught in Japanese and elective courses taught in English. While Japanese language courses are offered to true beginners, it is highly recommended that students have prior knowledge of the language (completion of Elementary Japanese I at minimum).

Program Dates

Program dates vary each year based upon the host institution's academic calendar, but the following are general guidelines:

  • Academic Year: Early September - Early August
  • Fall: Early September - Late December
  • Spring: Late March - Early August
Application Process

Students will be required to complete two applications:

  • an internal Kent State Education Abroad application,
  • and a partner university application.

These quick steps will help walk you through the process.

1. Start an Education Abroad Application

When you click the "Apply Now" button (located towards the top and bottom of this page), you will be brought to the Education Abroad application system where you can view program costs and start an application. Be sure to submit your application before the deadline!

2. Wait for Acceptance

Once you have submitted your application, it will be reviewed by an Education Abroad Advisor. Applications are evaluated on a rolling basis. Please note that acceptance to the program by 5X社区 does not serve as final approval. The host institution or program provider grants final approval for each applicant.

3. Complete the Host University Application

Once your Education Abroad application has been accepted, you will be nominated to the host university. You will complete the host university鈥檚 application and wait for official acceptance to the program. 

Academics

Eligibility

  • Full-time, degree-seeking student at Kent State
  • Any major; Japanese minor preferred but not required
  • Minimum cumulative GPA: 2.5 or higher
  • Completion of Elementary Japanese I recommended

Academic Programs

Some courses (offered in English) cover Japanese history, culture, business, and literature. Students are required to enroll in one of eight graded levels of Japanese language courses, from beginning to advanced. Initial placement will be according to a proficiency test given during orientation. Students are also eligible to take courses outside of the core curriculum, including courses in Chinese, Korean, French, and German, as well as humanities courses together with Japanese students.

The following course subjects are taught in English and also have a simplified Japanese option available for intermediate or higher level speakers:

  • Japanese History
  • Japanese Culture
  • Japanese Business
  • Japanese Management
  • Japanese Literature
  • Japanese Society
  • Seminar in Japan Studies

While it may be possible for students who have not completed formal Japanese classes to participate in the NUFS exchange program, it is absolutely imperative for students to learn the phonetic writing systems of hiragana and katakana. The Japanese language textbooks are written entirely in Japanese and assume students have some basic knowledge of the language. 

Transferring Credits

Transfer Credits

With this program, students enroll in courses at a partner (host) institution. You will need to transfer the credits you earn abroad back to 5X社区.

Upon successful completion of the program, the host institution will issue you an official transcript, which will be needed for the credit transfer process.

You must earn passing grades on the courses you take abroad for the credits to transfer. 

Prior to departure, students will meet with their academic advisor to complete a Transfer Course Planning (TCP) Form, which will outline the courses you plan to take while abroad and how the courses will transfer to 5X社区. 

Some courses have already been pre-approved for transfer to Kent State and can be viewed on the Transfer Credit Guide. Please note that this is only a guide and is NOT a comprehensive list of courses available at each partner institution.

Credit Approval

Prior to departure, it is your responsibility to meet with your academic advisor to discuss the courses you plan to take while abroad.

If a course needs to be evaluated for transfer, you are responsible for working with your education abroad advisor to obtain the syllabus and have it reviewed by Kent State faculty.

Nagasaki, Japan鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧嬧嬧

Nagasaki is the capital and largest city of the Nagasaki Prefecture on the Kyushu island in Japan. The language commonly spoken in the city is the Nagasaki dialect of Japanese.

Japan is an island country located in East Asia. Students in the Nagasaki program can enjoy The Dejima Museum of History, Megane Bridge, and the Siebold Memorial Museum.

The city of Nagasaki features a unique culture. The city has garnered several nicknames for itself, including the 鈥淐ity of Peace鈥 and the 鈥淣aples of the Orient.鈥 

Nagasaki is also home to various architectural landmarks that students can explore. Several of these locations include the Nagasaki Peace Park and Nagasaki Chinatown.

Many activities are available for students in the Nagasaki program. Some of these activities include visiting museums, gardens, and historic sites. The city also features great cuisine for students to enjoy, including tempura and castella.

Transportation

Airports

Nagasaki Airport (NGS) is an international airport that is located approximately 37 minutes by car from NUFS. Exchange students will typically be asked to fly into Fukuoka Airport (FUK) on a specific date to meet as a group, stay in a nearby hotel overnight, and then take a bus to campus.

Local Transit

NUFS is served by the local bus service and the university's school bus. 

Housing & Meals

Accommodations

Students may choose to live in the on-campus Ampelos Dormitory with either a single or double room. Students are required to enroll in the meal plan for daily breakfasts and dinners and will pay monthly rent for the dormitory and monthly utility bills. There are regular social events planned for students who live in Ampelos, as well as access to a fitness room, community hall, dining hall, corporate kitchen, and laundry room.

Pre-Departure Orientation

Prior to your study abroad experience, you will participate in a mandatory pre-departure orientation hosted by the Office of Global Education. During this orientation, you will be provided with information including but not limited to:

  • international travel procedures;
  • in-country resources;
  • health and safety resources and information;
  • culture shock and resources to help prepare for living abroad.

All students are encouraged to register with the prior to departure.

In addition, we encourage you to visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) travel page for for traveling to your destination(s).

If vaccinations or medications are needed according to the CDC, you should make arrangements for appointments with your healthcare provider or the DeWeese Health Center as soon as possible. Appointment openings at the DeWeese Health Center are limited and vaccines may need to be ordered, which takes time. Please note that not all immunizations are available at the DeWeese Health Center.
