Michael Loderstedt, 5X professor of art in printmaking/photography, shows his passion for photography and printmaking through his teachings and travels. Loderstedt’s passion and hard work won him the 2013 Outstanding Research and Scholar Award.
Kent State’s Outstanding Research and Scholar Awards recognize outstanding faculty members for their scholarly contributions that have brought acknowledgements to their fields of study and to Kent State.
“It is a terrific honor to be recognized by your employer for the work one had done as an artist,” says Loderstedt. “In the arts we must practice what we teach; to mentor our students that a career in the arts is not only possible, but rich and rewarding.”
Christine Havice, Ph.D., director of Kent State’s School of Art nominated Loderstedt and says that he has a creative imagination that can benefit everyone.
Loderstedt incorporates photography, printmaking, artist books and installation in his work. In 1981, he received his B.F.A. in printmaking from East Carolina University, and in 1985 he earned his M.F.A. from Kent State. Locally, his work is showcased in multiple public collections throughout the state, including the Cleveland Museum of Art, Progressive Insurance, the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and the Akron Art Museum. Loderstredt’s work is also exhibited nationally and internationally in Philadelphia, New York, Germany, Italy, Holland and Belgium.
Loderstedt established partnerships with artist groups in Belgium and Germany, and then designed trips for art students interested in printmaking collaboration. Kent State art students have had the opportunity to study in Europe because of this.
“The Europe trips were his ideas,” says Havice. “He’s a perfect example of a dedicated teacher who is also an internationally recognized artist. He demonstrates excellence in both teaching and creative research, as well as in service to his profession.”
Loderstedt’s passion continues to lead him and his students all over the world.
