Safety Notification Following Assault Report

The university was informed of an incident that occurred off campus in the area of University Oaks Apartments between 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Monday, November 7.  The person involved stated they were approached by a male subject who said he was having car trouble and needed help.  He asked the person to get in the car to help him start it.  Once inside the car, the male subject began to assault the person who was trying to help.  The person being assaulted was able to run away without further incident.

The male subject is described as a black male, 6’ to 6’2” tall, muscular build, with close cut hair, wearing gray or silver pants and a long sleeve navy blue University of Akron “V” neck sweatshirt.

The person was driving a late model vehicle, possibly a Honda Civic, silver or light gold in color.

Anyone with information about this incident should contact the City of Kent Police at 330-673-7732 or may call Kent State Police at 330-672-2212.

Kent State Police advise that when walking on or near campus, you should always follow your instincts. If you think you’re in danger, try to get out of the situation and report it to the police.   If you are approached while walking, cross the street or change directions. If you are being followed, do not go home. Go to a place where there are other people as soon as you are able. If at all possible, walk with someone else. Always walk in well-lit areas. Avoid alleys and deserted parking lots. Take special precaution in parking structures, stairwells, elevators, bathrooms, and dark areas with shrubbery or objects an assailant can hide behind.

While most people use their cell phones to dial 911, there are also more than 40 "blue light phones" located around campus in parking lots and along sidewalks that you can use in the event of an emergency. You may also request a security escort to walk with you on campus by calling 330-672-7004.
