A Mathematician's Favorite Meal? Pizza Pi!

University Culinary Services and the Flash Activities Board foster an inviting campus culture through the Slice of Pi event

March 14, otherwise known as Pi Day for its numerical similarities to the famous mathematical constant, has become a widely celebrated occasion, both in educational settings and among math aficionados.

In honor of the day, students, faculty and staff gathered in room 218 of the Kent Student Center for the Slice of Pi event to sample pizza pies from dining locations across campus.

This is the University Culinary Services’ second year celebrating Pi Day, with last year’s event focusing on the opening of Homeslice Pizzeria in the Hub.

After making their pizza selections, attendees also participated in the hunt for the official Kent State ice cream flavor.

Attendees had the chance to sample scoops and choose between three tasty flavors: Chocolate/Brownie Chunk/Pretzel Mix, Cookies and Cream/Peanut Butter Mix and Sugar Cookie/Cookie Dough Mix. Through a simple survey, samplers indicated their favorite flavor and helped assign it a name. Follow for the big reveal when it's determined.

The event was organized by Sarah Korzan, assistant director of University Culinary Services and a registered dietitian, UCS campus dietitian, and Amy Kittle, special events coordinator for University Housing and Culinary Services. As students debated their favorite flavor, Korzan teased, "We'll just have to wait and see."

To add to the fun, the Flash Activities Board teamed up with Culinary Services to give away prizes including a jellycat toy, a projector and a pizza-printed blanket.

Kyralin Kramp, a senior public health major and Flash Activities Board event staffer, worked the table, promoting future events for students to attend.

Smiles were found across the room as attendees enjoyed their selections. Specialty slices and decadent ice cream favors brought the Kent State Community together to celebrate Pi Day in the tastiest way.
